Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify and explain instances of gentrification in a metropolitan area of a peripheral capitalist country. The first theme is an exploration of gentrification as a process ultimately driven by globalization. It does not refer solely to the replacement of residents of a certain section of the inner-city. The process also embraces the characteristics of the locality. It results from changes in the local employment structure and changes in housing policy. The second theme is a contextualization of the process. It may occur in cities of peripheral as well as advanced capitalist countries. The aim is to clarify the contextual variations that emerge in the local and broader setting in the course of gentrification . - (AGD)
