Abstract

The aim of this study is to derive radiometrically a sand-mud map with a high resolution for the Hollandsch Diep and Haringvliet, 2 semi-stagnant fresh water basins in the southwestern part of the Rhine-Meuse Estuary (the Netherlands). This paper reports on the mapping of the underwater bottom utilising the Multi-Detector system for Underwater Sediment Activity (MEDUSA). The interpolated sand-mud distribution of the top layer of the aquatic sediment shows a distinct correlation with bathymetry : the deeper channels are mud-rich, whereas the shallow zones are predominantly sandy. In general, the mud content decreases in the seaward direction
