Abstract

This paper reviews the setting and occurence of the March 1933 rockslide at la Josefina and the release of the resulting rockslide dam, which blocked the Paute River. It also reports the author's field survey of rockslide-related sediment deposited in the Burgay River near its confluence with the Paute River. Finally, it examines the catastrophic rockslide event in the broader context of the frequency and magnitude of sediment movement and storage in the drainage basin, and of human and natural aspects of environmental change
