Abstract

The article analyses the distribution of the seats of Poland's more important enterprises, making use of the newest version of the List of the 500 largest enterprises in Poland in 2000. The links between the administrative rank of a locality on the one hand, and the distribution of firms' central offices and level of turnover achieved have also been studied. In relation to the places in which business management has tended to congregate, it proved possible to identify three hierarchical groups, i.e. that conferring a dominant role on Warsaw, that conferring such a role of voivodship (regional) centres other than Warsaw and that conferring such a role of district (poviat) level centres other than voivodship capitals. It was possible to conclude, in general terms, that the more advanced the sector of the economy, the higher up the administrative hierarchy the location of the seat of an enterprise representative of it is likely to be. - (BJ)
