Abstract

Essay explores the relationship between national parks and nearby residents by reconstructing how locals from Montana shaped the world's first national park-Yellowstone. They played roles as explorers of the bizarre, as tourists identifying key attractions, as trail cutters and road builders establishing the human landscape, as entrepreneurs guiding the tourism infrastructure, and as arbiters over the extent of federal protection over park wildlife and resources. - (SLD)
