Abstract

The paper describes landforms and Pleistocene slope sediments present of five residual basalt hills in the Kaczawa Upland. The hills are exposed deeper parts of volcanic plugs of Miocene age. Numerous rock outcrops on the slopes occur where joint density decreased locally or columnar jointing surfaces dip into the slope. Some rock outcrops are frost-riven cliffs. Among slope sediments, block fields and heterogenous grus-loamy deposits are to be distinguished. Surface mesorelief indicates the origin in a periglacial environment. Two altitudinal zones with different sets of landforms are identified on the slopes, with the separating boundary at 430-450 m a.s.l. Large rock outcrops and block fields are typical for the upper zone, present on the highest hills only. The boundary is interpreted as a trimpline, indicative of the locally lowered ice sheet surfave during the Odranian glaciation. The summital parts of the highest hills have probably been nunataks. - (BJ)
