A continental transect extending from eastern Germany (Chrisdorf) to eastern Belarus (Uzlogi) spans 20° (12°25' E - 32°37' E) of longitude and has a difference in mean annual temperature of 3.5° (from 5.0 to 7.8°). Along it, all the identified study sites feature the two fresh pine forest communities - Peucedano-Pinetum and Leucobryo-Pinetum. The basic aims of this study were to present the relationship between the geographical location longitude of sites and the percentage shares of numbers and cover of plant species, as well as an average value for these species' Ellenberg continentality indexes K. direct west-east changesperteining to most groups of species with determined continentality index K were observed, especially the disappearence of oceanic and suboceanic species with increasing continentality (highly correlated with longitude). The number of species with a given K index of continentality is a better determinant of mocroclimatic differentiation in pine forest than their cover. The two associations of suboceanic and subcontinental pine forest are, above all separable by reference to the share of oceanic and suboceanic species (large numbers and high cover in Leucobryo-Pinetum) and that of neutral species (large numbers and high cover in the subcontinental Peucedano-Pinetum, and a lack of them in the suboceanic Leucobryo-Pinetum). - (BJ)
