Abstract

An improved equilibrium terrestrial biosphere model, BIOME3China, was run using present climate data to model potential biomes on the Tibetan Plateau on a 10-foot grid. Author found the simulated climates in good agreement with a potential natural vegetation map. Simulated vegetation under a changed climate with a CO2 concentration of 500 ppmv caused a large reduction in the temperate desert, alpine steppe, desert, and ice-polar desert and caused a large increase in the conifer forest, temperate shrubland/meadow, and temperate steppe ; there was a general northwestward shift of all vegetation zones. Author also used BIOME3China to predict the net primary production of each grid. - (SLD)
