Abstract

An ethnobotanical survey was carried out in a campesino community (San Gerardo de Dota) in a Costa Rican montane cloud forest. Families were asked how they used indigenous and introduced vascular plants along an altitude gradient of 2000 to 3000 m. Out of 590 known species, 189 are considered useful, of which 24% were used for medicines, 40% for food, and 24% for construction or fuel. Use of indigenous species is becoming less common and knowledge about medicinal plants is expected to disappear soon in the rural community. Appendix lists all useful plants with information on each. - (SLD)
