Abstract

Reviews the conflicts between the rich biodiversity of Chiapas and poverty, population pressure, environmental degradation, and political conflict. Main example of biodiversity discussed are the wild medicinal plants used by the Maya. The Maya International Cooperative Biodiversity Group (Maya ICBG) is encouraging cultivation of medicinal plants and the exploration of potential markets. - (SLD)
