Abstract

A wonderful, concise account of the life and work of Baron Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) perhaps the most polymathic scientist of the nineteenth century. Details of his private life, including his presumed homosexuality, are provided. The highpoints and major accomplishments of his and Aimé Bonpland's expedition to the Americas are recounted. The impact that this expedition had in Europe and the resulting publications are discussed briefly. His expedition to Russia is discussed. Finally, there is a brief discussion of Cosmos and its significance in showing the unity of all of Nature. - (SLD)
