Abstract

Examples of Late Miocene fault reactivation, observed in Western Sicily, are illustrated. Reactivation consists of positively inverted Mesozoic structures may be identified as the weakness zones of the hinge between carbonate platforms and pelagic basins ; whereas the Neogene extension was mostly localised in the Sicilian foreland. These normal faults, randomly oriented with respect to the subsequent tectonic transport direction, have produced different geometries in the footwall of the normal faults, and also lead to different kinematics along the fault plane. - (NF)
