Abstract

Base mapping is an obvious, but often neglected, function of remote sensing. Therefore, this paper begins by examining the rôle remote sensing has to play in this area. Particular attention is paid to the increasing availability and use of fine spatial resolution satellite sensor imagery and the data requirements of geographical information systems (GIS). This is followed by a broader discussion on the various mapping applications of remote sensing and, finally, a brief summary of general developments in the field
