Abstract

Located at the southern end of the Andes, the Patagonia Icefield comprises the Hielo Patagónico Norte (HPN) and the Hielo Patagónico Sur (HPS). Combining RADARSAT images (1997) with either Landsat MSS (1987 for HPN) or TM (1986 for HPS), variations of major outlet glaciers were studied. The results demonstrated that RADARSAT images provided invaluable data for the study of the glacier variation in Patagonia, where perpetual inclement weather conditions usually prohibit the acquisition of images by the conventional optical sensors
