Abstract

Geoarchaeological investigations in the Drama Basin and surrounding areas are used to analyse landscape responses to long-term land use changes where the Mediterranean area meets the Balkans. The settlement of Eastern Macedonia since the Late Neolithic allows analysis of the interaction between settlement history and the triggering of soil erosion and alluvial aggradation over the last 7 millennia. This research aims to determine phases of stream aggradation, incision, soil erosion and landscape stability throughout the Holocene, and to understand the role of physical and anthropogenic processes in landscape destabilisation
