Abstract

The paper focuses on attempts at voluntary segregation by Indians in Durban in the 1940s. The central state was relectant to introduce statutory residential segregation because of international repercussions. It preferred voluntary segregation and was met by Indian political organisations to protect their commercial, residential and investment interests. - (AJC)
