Abstract

This study sets out to examine the significance of local topographic factors on the Equilibrium Line Altitude, ELA, and ultimately to determine whether regional ELAs are sufficiently representative of small glaciers. Therefore, the scandinavian glaciers analysed in this study range across both north-south and east-west gradients of climate and topography, giving variations in altitude, aspect, size, gradient, morphology and dynamics. It is concluded that current subjective topographic map-based analyses are unlikely to be sufficiently accurate for predicting the regional ELA of small, sensitive and marginal glaciers
