Self-organized criticality in riverbank systems

Authors(s) and Affiliation(s)

Abstract

The AA. document bank failure along 180 km of riverbanks in 3 watersheds of the northern Yellowstone ecosystem. They examine how well these patterns fit within the theoretical context of self-organized criticality, and discuss some of the practical implications of these findings. A restoration or stabilization effort will not eliminate the bank instability. Instead, it will transfer that instability to neighboring riverbank areas
