Abstract

The work is divided in nine chapters : 1- The Genesis of Burma, 2- British occupation, 3- Independent Burma, 4- Period of parliamentary democracy, 5- Independant Burma : second phase to date, 6- Major land marks of the military regime, 7- Nationalism : its evolution in Burma, 8- Ideology : evolution and revolution in Burma, 9- International gambit : politics of casino. The A., a former Burmese guerilla and a dissenter of the military regime, brings forth the complexity of Burma's political and social dilemmas. It traces its roots in the historical and cultural diversities of burmese people, in the feudal and colonial heritage of the country and in the stormy whirlwind of the modern political doctrines. In his opinion, Burma stands at the crossroads of democracy and desintegration. The situation is unchanged in 2005. - (GL)
