Abstract

The book has three parts. I- Beginnings, discovery and the colonial years. Part II- Wars and their aftermath. Part III- Present, Imperfect, Future uncertain. The A. relates the exploration of the Mekong and the colonial years which were followed by many wars and tragedies along the Mekong River. At present, the Mekong is at peace but the construction of dams, plans of development and bridges are leading to an uncertain future. The author questions the effect of building dams on the river and its tributaries. He wonders whether the effect of many forms pollutions are reversible. - (GL)
