Abstract

In this paper, geographic information systems (GIS) software is used to map uplifted coastal terraces in a tectonically active area, the Northern Channel Islands of California. The AA. develop a technique using DTMs to map the distribution extent, and elevation of coastal terraces, and then demonstrate how the results can be used to describe patterns of tectonic deformation. The technique could also be applied to other problems involving coastal terraces, or to studies involving other similarly shaped landforms such as floodplain, fluvial terraces, pediments, or alluvial fans
