Abstract

This paper examines the level of soil erosion in South Africa, with special attention to the role of gully erosion (or donga erosion in local language). According to the study donga erosion is a very serious problem in the area, and physico-geographical conditions favour this type of erosion in many parts of the country. The main conclusion of the paper is that severe degradation is mainly due to anthropogenic factors and to mismanagement of the land so that protection against the formation of dongas must be based on proper land management and land use. - (JS)
