Abstract

This paper investigates the nature of aspect-controlled variations in freezing (and the likely associated frost heave stresses) within pre-existing hummocks and how this may contribute to the formation of elongate hummocks or the coalescence of closely spaced mounds. The field experiments were undertaken in the eastern alpine region of Lesotho, from late autumn to early spring in 1995 and 1996
