Overbank deposition along the concave side of the Red River meanders, Manitoba, and its geomorphic significance

Authors(s) and Affiliation(s)

The aim of this paper is to describe a style of overbank deposition on the concave side of meanders along the Red River, southern Manitoba. Here, the aggradation is intrinsically connected to earth sliding that develops along the river where the meanders are confined against glaciolacustrine deposits of the valleysides and to a lesser extent upon banks of eroding floodplain. In addition to characterizing the lateral and vertical extent of the deposition, the geomorphic importance of the deposits is discussed in terms of a sediment reworking process, preservation potential, and role in dampening lateral channel migration
