Abstract

This paper presents a sedimentological, palynological, and phytolith record from a 13 m deep Holocene sedimentary sequence, located in the Tsoaing River valley, southwestern Lesotho. Phytolith and pollen in the terminal Pleistocene layers confirm findings of local swamp occurrence and cool shrubby vegetation. The absence of pollen in the rest of the Holocene Tsoaing sediments may be due to seasonal oxidation during dry seasons in the central plateau under relatively warm conditions, rather than a cool montane environment
