Abstract

The AA. investigate 2 kinds of distinct micro-topographic features that commonly occur on broad, planar surfaces of barren desert pavements in the Sonoran Desert : plant scar mounds and plant scar depressions. Eidence is presented that both features originated beneath widely spaced, long-lived perennial plants that have long since disappeared. They also present information on contrasting spatial distributions of the 2 kinds of plant scars and implications of these differences to interpretations regarding timing and causes of ecological change during the late Quaternary
