Abstract

The article tries to inspire the current discussion about the possibility or impossibility of using systems theory as a theoretical approach in geography by focusing on a certain kind of questioning. Taking into account the relationship between geography and systems theory, it is necessary to acknowledge the different versions of systems theory communicated and advocated. This opens up a space of asking questions focussed on a certain understanding of functionalism : What is the purpose of system in different kinds of geography ? The article, then, discusses the consequences for geography as a science if the propositions about Luhmannian systems theory are taken seriously and finally proposes a way of understanding space within the framework of systems theory. - (IFL)
