Abstract

This paper reports the first year's results of monitoring of environmental factors at Madoi, northeastern Tibetan Plateau : air and ground temperatures, precipitation, snow depth, soil moisture and groundwater level. The data show either the absence of permafrost or the presence of relict permafrost at a depth below 10 m, suggesting significant permafrost degradation during the last few decades. The permafrost degradation is likely to have induced lowering of the groundwater level by a few meters
