Abstract

Sectors, whose products promote the development of individual peferences and goals or which serve as a source for personal entertainment or information have recently been grouped together under the heading of cultural industries. Favourable characteristics of the cultural industries are the positive growth rates and employment effects, the importance of creativity as a fundamental driving force for economic development, the flexibility of project based production networks as well as the globalized distribution networks of powerful transnational media and entertainment companies. Based on the detailed analysis of these characteristics, the paper suggests that the cultural industries should be integrated in the field of economic geography. - (IFL)
