Changes in the distribution of degraded land over time in the central Karoo, South Africa

Authors(s) and Affiliation(s)

The main aim of this study is to examine the change in extent of degraded areas and gully systems over time using data from 5 sets of aerial photographs. Data on the extent of crop cultivation is assessed as a possible ancillary causal factor for the observed degraded features. Reasons for changes are suggested in the light of available climatic and land use data for the study area. Data from erosion pins and sedimentation in 2 dams located in the study area are used to give a third dimension to the two-dimensional data obtained from the aerial photographs. Prospects for rehabilitation of degraded areas are discussed in the light of the results
