Causes and underlying processes of measurement variability in field erosion plots in Mediterranean conditions

The study presented in this paper includes results of soil erosion research carried out in 3 areas in semiarid Mediterranean ecosystems of SE Spain : 2 sites in the province of Murcia, and 1 in the province of Alicante, all located on limestone slopes. The aim of this paper is to determine the causes and explain the processes which provoke measurement variability of data in these 3 cases. Several examples are presented concerning : differences in long-term soil erosion data between open and closed plots; differences in soil loss derived from replica soil erosion plots; and differences in soil loss data derived from plots at a range of spatial scales
