Abstract

The AA. develop a permafrost classification system to describe the complex interaction of climatic and ecological processes in permafrost formation and degradation that differentiates 5 patterns of formation : climate-driven; climate-driven, ecosystem-modified; climate-driven, ecosystem-protected; ecosystem-driven; and ecosystem-protected permafrost. They present this classification as a conceptual framework for evaluating permafrost stability and provide examples of the permafrost characteristics and environmental conditions associated with each class
