Abstract

This paper discusses whether sedimentary structures within sand sheets from western Arctic Canada record permafrost conditions and, therefore, palaeoclimate, during sand-sheet formation. Its objectives are to : describe the abundance, size and morphology of inactive veins and wedges stratigraphically associated with the sand sheets; discuss the relationships between deposition, erosion and thermal-contraction cracking; and compare the structures with those from other contemporary permafrost regions and from former periglacial environments
