The origin, typology, spatial distribution and detrimental effects of the sinkholes developed in the alluvial evaporite karst of the Ebro River valley downstream of Zaragoza city (NE Spain)

Abstract

This work analyses the typology and distribution of the thoroughly mapped sinkholes in a 50 km2 stretch of the Ebro River valley downstream of Zaragoza city. The study aimed at comparing them with the geological, geomorphological, hydrogeological and hydrochemical data in order to propose a comprehensive interpretation of their origin and present degree of activity. The collapse sinkholes in this area cause substantial damage to the linear infrastructures, buildings and agriculture
