Abstract

The northern Harz foreland is the borderland between the former northern glacication and the periglacial area of Central Europe. The article describes every period from oldest sediments before the Elster glacial to periglacial conditions of the Weichsel glacial. Especially the early Saale period can be divided for the first time in this area into periglacial sediments, ice wedges and soils. On top of these layers follows the indicating layer of the Pleistocene in the Harz foreland, the gravel of the Mittelterrasse (middle terrace). It can be divided into several accumulation periods. - (IfL)
