Abstract

Due to sea-level fluctuation and their consequences for human activity, there is a strong connection between landscape development and the history of occupation in the costal area. The article describes the several transgression and regression phases of the North Sea level from the last glaciation until today and the settlement reactions on the changing natural environment. Early preventive measures were dwelling mounds (Wurten), from the 11th century on the building of dikes started. But diking led to higher storm flood levels and severe breaches of the dikes, which eventually resulted in the formation of large bays such as Dollart or Jade Bay. - (IfL)
