Abstract

This book offers an interdisciplinary dialogue about the spread of private communities in many parts of the world. Case studies are drawn from the USA, Latin America, the Middle East, Europe and China to explore local and global explanations of the phenomenon. Fifteen chapters show that the spread of privately organised and secured housing developments represents a distinct shift in the way cities are organised and create micro-territories with their own distinct constitutions. They serve to break down traditional social geographies and create new ones ; they alter patterns of urban security and insecurity ; and they give rise to new micro-societies. - (HC)
