Abstract

An exceptionally well-exposed and complete section comprised of at least three superposed loess units and three associated soils/paleosols was examined near the Milford Reservoir along the Republican River in northeastern Kansas. Detailed field and laboratory analyses in conjunction with numerical dating of soils and sediments via AMS (atomic mass spectrometry) radiocarbon and TL make it possible to : 1) identify the number and ages of loess units and soils/buried paleosols present, 2) estimate the duration and climatic character of past soil-forming environments represented, and 3) estimate rates of loess deposition and soil formation
