Abstract

This study was undertaken on an experimental farm in proximity to the city of Tumbaco, near the Ilaló volcano, 20 km east of Quito. The material derived from the fragmentation of the hardened volcanic ashes is stongly prone to pluvial erosion. Rainfall simulation was implemented before and after 3 cycles of cultivation to assess the evolution of soil structure and its susceptibility to erosion. The preferred option for land with these soils would be no tillage and a permanent soil cover (pasture) if they were to be utilised for agriculture
