Abstract

Norden is a particularly fruitful site for the examination of the ever-evolving meaning of landscape and region as place. Twenty contributors to this volume reveal how the regions and peoples of Northern Europe have been defined by the dominant culture of Europe while at the same time their landscapes and cultures have inspired ways of life elsewhere on the European continent. The twenty-two essays in this book provide an intricate picture of this culturally rich and geographically varied part of the world. Clusters of chapters discuss Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and then Norden as a whole. - (HC)
