Abstract

International Polar Years have been focal points for research activities among geoscientists. Over the past 120 years they have contributed to a better understanding and public awareness about the role the polar regions play in the earth's climate. The 1st International Polar Year took place in 1882-1883 and was devoted to circum-Arctic meteorological and magnetic measurements. They were repeated during the 2nd IPY (1932-1933) in a much denser network. The International Geophysical Year (1957-1958) focused on Antarctica and the investigation of the high atmosphere. The forthcoming 4th IPY (2007-2008) will deal with both polar regions and, for the first time, includes the participation of the indigenous people. - (IfL)
