Abstract

This paper is aimed at exploring whether there is a simple, reproducible relationship between fabric development and shear-strain magnitude that could be used to help test the bed-deformation model using the geologic record. Four basal tills and viscous putty have been sheared to high strains with a large ring-shear device. Three extensive sets of experiments have been performed, each with results that bear on the behavior of a different particle-size fraction (fine gravel, sand and silt/clay). This paper fully synthetizes these results and provides additional data to summarize the experimental basis for interpreting till fabric in the context of the bed-deformation model
