Abstract

The AA. examine some effects of a storm that occured over Northern Ireland on 16 July 2007. This produced local flooding in several places, however, only minor near-surface slope failures occurred, even on the steep slopes of the Antrim coast. Flowside failure requires the development of high pore water pressures, but such pressures are only achieved with wet antecedent conditions, and are rarely produce by single, intense storm events. This observation illustrates the difficulty of using weather patterns to predict mechanically complex slope failures
