Abstract

The European Economic Community was founded in 1957 in Rome and finally became the European Union in 1994. There is no doubt that it is today the most successful regional integration worldwide. No other integration is economically and politically as powerful as the EU. Most other regional integrations are focussing on trade and have only very little influence on the politics of their member countries. By August 2006, a total of more than 320 Regional Trade Agreements had been notified to the WTO. More than half of these were notified after the WTO was created in January 1995. However, only about 180 of these agreements are currently in force. This article looks at the most important RTAs like ASEAN, NAFTA and MERCOSUR. The development of these RTAs is described and the most important problems are analyzed. A special focus lies on the trade relations of the RTAs. Differences between the structure and organisation of ASEAN, NAFTA and MERCOSUR are also looked at. - (IfL)
