Abstract

In 1987 Ireland faced the challenge of initiating steps to secure a more positive economic future. A broad consensus of unions, employers, farmers and the government succeeded in reaching this target. Ireland´s economic performance was especially unique in the 90´s. However, the social and spatial consequences arising from the headlong development into the “Celtic Tiger” must be considered as well. The Eastern expansion of the EU made the growth rate of the “Baltic Tiger” possible. The central functions which Ireland has attained for itself in the meantime will be hard to retain in the long term. All the more important, therefore, is the clear perception of the situation and sustainable program for dealing with socioeconomic and spatial consequences. In this connection the economic and social development of the Baltic EU member states appear to be predictable to some extent: The study of Ireland as a case example could prove to be meaningful. - (IfL)
