Abstract

The article looks at recent industrial developments in "Mitteldeutschland". Based on a pracmatic definition of the regional delimitation, statistics from the three new German “Länder” Sachsen-Anhalt, Thüringen and Sachsen are being analyzed. Emphasis is being put on how actors define “Mitteldeutschland” and whether the region can be considered a functionally interconnected economic region, as far as the industrial development is concerned. Recent strategies of regional economic promotion agencies create increasingly economic clusters and cooperation networks. As a conclusion, the authors interpret the industrial region of "Mitteldeutschland" as a valid marketing concept to join forces and to position the strengths of the region on a national, but also on an international level. - (IfL)
