Abstract

The central German region (Mitteldeutschland, comprising the states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia) is loosing people since the unification with West Germany. In addition to the general German problem of low birth rates here considerable migration losses have to be noted. Since migration movements are selective one can expect far reaching consequences for those regions where migration originates. The essay analyses those consequences and explores possible strategies for regional economic development to counterbalance the migration losses. - (IfL)
