Abstract

The vegetation of eastern High Asia is characterized by golf course-like pastures at high elevations and the contrast of forested, shaded slopes with treeless, sunny slopes at lower elevations in the valleys. Both the high pastures of Kobresia pygmaea and the sun-exposed pasturelands are widely considered to be natural. Grazing exclusion experiments have shown that grasslands would predominate in the absence of cattle influence. The golf course-like Kobresia pygmaea pastures of the world´s largest alpine ecosystem are thus an artificial grassland type created by grazing. Isolated trees scattered throughout the pasturelands demonstrate the forest potential of currently treeless pastures. Human-induced fire and grazing are believed to be the responsible for the treelessness. Initial dating of evidence shows that herders have been changing the environment of the high pastures of eastern Tibet according to their needs since at least 7000 years. - (IfL)
