Besides a process of democratisation the Kingdom of Bhutan stands in an upheaval as a result of population growth and extremely limited soil resources. Only 10% of the total area is suitable for agricultural production. Traditional land use systems, successfully applied over generations in terms of sustainable land use, are stepwise replaced by modern agricultural techniques for productivity increase and food maintenance. The consequences are multiple forms of soil degradation up to a total loss of the fertile crumb. Simultaneously, protection of environment and natural resources, conservation of cultural heritage, and sustainable management form long-term political aims. The paper outlines the landscape and the soils with their properties and special features, and puts the soils potential of land use and degradation in this socio-political context. - (IfL)
