Abstract

The period of national states has not finished yet : on 24 August 1991 Ukraine declared its independence - from the Soviet Union as well as from Russia. This way the first Ukrainian state was established. At present 46.9 million people live on the national territory of 604,000 km2. This article about the geographical characteristics of Ukraine begins with a glance at the history. After the reflection on frontiers and the administrative division follows the portrayal of special relief features, for example the Podilian Tableland. The major regional structure can be detected in the general map. The paragraph "Large natural regions" deals with the geographical zones found there, soils and their degradation, and with the land utilization as well. With regard to population, the attention is directed to its ethnic structure, and also to its general and urban-rural distribution. The article is concluded with a view of the inland traffic networks, and of the industrial regions. - (IfL)
